The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team, ranked No. 25 in the state in the first coaches poll of the season, hosts College of the Canyons Wednesday night at 5 p.m.
The Lasers started their 2024 season with a four-set defeat (25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-13) to Moorpark last Friday on the road.
Both teams struggled some offensively with Irvine Valley hitting .066 as a team and Moorpark hitting .131 as a team.
IVC was led by sophomore outside hitter Audrey Fowler, who finished with nine kills and 19 digs. Fowler was an all-Orange Empire Conference player as a libero for the Lasers last season.
Freshman opposite Hailey Oldham ended with six kills and 12 digs, freshman middle blocker Valeria Leon added six blocks and freshman settter Emmi Scelzo recorded 10 digs and ran the offense with 21 assists.
The Lasers are led by first-year head coach Alissa Blevins, who was a former setter at Irvine Valley.
Canyons began its season last Friday with a tough, five-set (18-25, 25-20, 25-15, 17-25, 15-11) loss to Cerritos at home.
The Cougars return three players that received all-Western State Conference, South Division honors last season.
Middle blocker Leah Gillie was named first team after receiving 100 kills and 34 aces.
Libero Presley Golphenee was second team after finishing with 337 digs and Ana Vasquez was honorable mention ended with a team-best 124 kills on the year.
