2016 Irvine Valley baseball schedule released

The Irvine Valley baseball schedule for the 2016 has been released.

The Lasers will play 18 home games, including their first two of the season.

IVC will play 15 non-conference games.

The Lasers start Orange Empire Conference play on Saturday, March 5 against Santa Ana at 12 p.m.

A new wrinkle to conference play this season will see teams play three-game series against each other.

So IVC hosts Santa Ana March 5, plays at Santa Ana on Tuesday, March 8 and then hosts the Dons again on Thursday March 10.

Irvine Valley had an impressive season last year, finishing with a record of 23-18 overall and reaching the Super Regional round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

It won four of its final six games to end the regular season to make the playoffs. IVC, seeded 17th, won a single elimination playoff play-in game at LA Mission, 16-6. It was one of the biggest wins in the history of the program.

IVC trailed, 6-0, heading into the top of the seventh inning, but scored two runs in the seventh inning and an amazing 10 runs in the eighth inning to rally for the victory. IVC finished with 20 hits in the contest.

Irvine Valley then turned around and swept a pair of games at No. 2 Oxnard to move to the Super Regionals. IVC defeated Oxnard, 8-0, behind freshman pitcher Ryan Abady in the opener and then defeated the Condors, 1-0, behind the work of sophomore Justin Zielinski. Zielinski pitched his school-record eighth complete game of the season.

Zielinski and Abady were named to 2015 all-Orange Empire Conference baseball teams.

Both were among the top pitchers in the state this past season.

Zielinski was named first team all-conference and also All-Southern California.

Abady, a freshman left-hander, will be one of Irvine Valley's top returners this year.

He had a record of 8-4 with a 2.02 ERA in 102.2 innings last season. Abady had four complete games and two shutouts.

Other top returners are expected to be outfielders Dillon Millar, Clint Jack and Trey Ryan, shortstop Jordan Gillerman, designated hitter and first baseman Robbie Espinosa and catcher Branden Williams.
