Baseball team drops second straight game to Long Beach City

Irvine Valley's baseball team dropped its second consecutive game to Long Beach City, falling, 9-5, on Thursday on the road.

The Vikings defeated Irvine Valley, 8-0, on Tuesday at IVC.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 5-5 overall.

The Lasers looked good through four innings.

IVC sophomore starting pitcher Ryan Abady shut out the Vikings over the first four innings.

And the Lasers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. IVC went ahead without recording a hit.

Irvine Valley took advantage of two hit batters, a walk, and a wild pitch to score twice. Freshman right fielder Weston Ellis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in freshman second baseman Tyler Odekirk.

And then sophomore shortstop Jordan Gillerman scored on a wild pitch by Long Beach City starting pitcher Michael Hurtado.

But Long Beach scored three times in the bottom of the fifth against Abady to take the lead for good. Gavin Windes' sacrifice fly scored Tanner Moore to tie up the game before Jackson Foss' RBI single drove in Tai Tiedemann to put LBCC ahead.

Long Beach City added two runs in the sixth and scored four more in the seventh to take a 9-2 advantage.

Irvine Valley scored its final three runs on a two-out, three-run homer by freshman third baseman Adam Rossit in the top of the ninth inning.

Irvine Valley managed just five hits on the afternoon. Sophomore left fielder Clint Jack, Odekirk, Gillerman, sophomore center fielder Dillon Millar and Rossit each had a hit for IVC.

Odekirk and Gillerman each had doubles for the team.

Long Beach City totaled 14 hits in the contest. Tiedemann went 3 for 5 with a pair of triples and 3 RBI to help lead Long Beach City College, which improved its record to 6-5 overall.

Tony Monroy went 2 for 5 with a double and triple. He also scored three times and drove in a run. Moore was 2 for 3 with a pair of walks, three runs and a RBI.

Hurtado (1-2) picked up his first win of the season after allowing two runs and just one hit over 5.1 innings. Evan May tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief before freshman Kyle Castillo pitched a perfect eighth inning, but served up the home run in the ninth.

Abady (1-1) took the loss for Irvine Valley. He allowed five runs on eight hits and five walks with one strikeout over 5.2 innings.

Sophomore Joseph Chacon was charged with four runs on four hits and one walk in 1.1 innings and freshman Tyler Venturelli pitched a scoreless inning for IVC. He gave up two hits and had one strikeout.

Irvine Valley returns on action on Friday, playing at West Los Angeles at 2 p.m.
