Baseball team walks off with win over LA Valley in ninth inning

Irvine Valley's baseball won a hard-fought game over LA Valley with some heroics in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday.

Freshman first baseman Tyler Wagner's fielder's choice to second base brought in a charging Weston Ellis with the winning run in IVC's 4-3 victory over the Monarchs at home.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 7-5 overall. It was the Lasers' second straight victory.

Ellis, IVC's freshman right fielder, went 2 for 4 with a run scored and three stolen bases for IVC. The Lasers had six stolen bases in the game.

Sophomore center fielder Dillon Millar was 3 for 4 with one RBI and one stolen base.

Freshman second baseman Tyler Odekirk was 2 for 4 with a run scored and one RBI and sophomore shortstop Jordan Gillerman was 2 for 4.

Irvine Valley had 12 hits on the day.

Sophomore right-hander Kyle Goodbrand earned the win in relief. He threw 2.1 innings, gave up two hits and struck out three batters.

LA Valley tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning when Robert Berumen doubled off of Goodbrand on a 3-2 count.

Goodbrand came on in relief of freshman Matthew Markus, who went 2/3 of an inning and was charged with two runs after giving up a hit and hitting a batter.

Sophomore Cole Millerd turned in a solid outing as the starter on the mound. He went six innings and gave up one run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

LA Valley scored first when Andrew Penner hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the third inning.

Irvine Valley came back with two runs in the bottom of the third. Odekirk had a RBI single and Millar followed with an RBI single.

And the Lasers took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman designated hitter Jarrett Anton.

In the bottom of the ninth with the game tied, 3-3, Ellis led off with a hard infield hit to second base. He then stole second base and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman catcher Andrew Nero.

Wagner did his job to make contact off of LA Valley reliever Bryan Duda. He hit a slow roller to second base and Ellis was able to slide under the tag at home.

Daniel Acosta took the loss in relief for LA Valley. He went 3.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Penner and Dylan Mersola each had two hits for the Monarchs.

Irvine Valley plays at LA Valley on Thursday at 2 p.m.
