Baseball team wins second straight game, beats Victor Valley

Irvine Valley's baseball team won its second straight game and fourth in its last five contests on Thursday afternoon.

The Lasers (5-3 overall) put up another double-digit hit game as a team and got a strong start on the mound from sophomore right-hander Kyle Goodbrand in a 9-1 win over Victor Valley at home.

Irvine Valley finished with 14 hits in the game. It was the fourth game in a row that the team has had 12 hits or more.

Sophomore left fielder and lead-off hitter Clint Jack went 3 for 5 with one RBI and raised his batting average to .432 on the year.

Sophomore center fielder Dillon Millar was 3 for 5 with three runs scored, freshman second baseman Tyler Odekirk went 2 for 4 with a run scored, freshman right fielder Weston Ellis was 2 for 5 with one RBI and freshman designated hitter Joseph Gomez was 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and three RBI.

Irvine Valley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Jordan Gillerman.

With the game tied, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth, Millar scored after an error on a pick-off throw by Victor Valley's catcher and then Jack hit an RBI single up the middle to give Irvine Valley the lead for good at 3-1.

IVC made it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by Ellis and Gomez being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Gomez knocked in two runs with a single to center field in the bottom of the seventh.

It was all more than enough for Goodbrand, who improved his record to 2-1 on the year.

He went five innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Freshman right-hander Adam Lamar threw two scoreless innings and then sophomores Joseph Chacon and Andrew Jimenez closed out the game with a scoreless inning apiece.

IVC pitchers held Victor Valley to just four hits overall.

Anthony Beasley took the loss for Victor Valley to fall to 1-1. He gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk.

Victor Valley's record went to 2-7 on the year.

Irvine Valley has the weekend off and will host Long Beach City next Tuesday at 2 p.m.
