Baseball team loses close conference game to Golden West

Irvine Valley's baseball team got out in front with an early run, but it wasn't enough in a 2-1 Orange Empire Conference loss to Golden West at home on Thursday afternoon.

Golden West has taken the first two games of the three-game series with the Lasers. Golden West defeated Irvine Valley, 13-2, on Tuesday in Huntington Beach.

The Rustlers improved their record to 15-8 overall and 4-4 in conference.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 10-13 overall and 1-7 in conference.

Tyler Tungate pitched a five-hit complete game in Golden West's victory. Tungate (4-1) allowed one run, struck out seven and walked six.

IVC sophomore starting pitcher Kyle Goodbrand went six innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Goodbrand (3-5) took the loss.

Freshman right-handed hurler Jason McClellan threw three scoreless innings to wrap up the game for IVC. McClellan didn't allow a hit or walk and had two strikeouts.

Irvine Valley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

With one out, sophomore center fielder Dillon Millar walked and sophomore shortstop Jordan Gillerman singled through the left side on a hit and run play. Millar moved to third base.

Freshman right fielder Weston Ellis then reached on an infield single to bring in Millar from third base.

Golden West tied the game in the top of the second inning. After a hit by Michael Fucks and a walk by John Shattles, Daniel Maguire reached on an error. Fuchs scored on the play.

The Rustlers nearly added to their lead in the top of the fourth, but IVC sophomore left fielder Clint Jack threw out Maguire at home after a hit by Tyler Depreta

Irvine Valley had its chances, but left two runners on base in the third and fifth innings.

In the top of the sixth inning, Golden West took the lead for good. With one out, Fuchs doubled down the right field line. With two outs, Goodbrand walked Shattles, Maguire and Depreta to bring in a run and make it a 2-1 game.

IVC's had Millar reach third base in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. He singled, advanced on a throwing error and moved to third on a wild pitch. But Tungate ended the inning with a strikeout.

Tungate walked IVC freshman catcher Cole Joy in the bottom of the ninth, but got a groundout to finish the game.

Gillerman went 2 for 4 for Irvine Valley, while Fuchs was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Depreta went 2 for 3 with a walk and one RBI for Golden West.

The two teams finish up the three-game series on Saturday at Golden West at noon.
