All-OEC shortstop Jordan Gillerman wraps up summer in Canada

Irvine Valley all-Orange Empire Conference shortstop and future St. John's University player Jordan Gillerman finished up a season playing in the summer Northwoods League last weekend.

The Northwoods League is considered the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players. Finishing its 23rd season of summer collegiate baseball, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in the world with 18 teams.

Gillerman played for the Thunder Bay Border Cats in Ontario, Canada with many of his future St. John's teammates. The manager for most of the season was former IVC all-conference catcher Danny Benedetti.

Benedetti is also an assistant coach at St. John's.

The Border Cats, who are the only Canadian team in the Northwoods League, finished with a record of 21-51 overall. The team played better over the second half of the season, going 15-23 in the North Division.

Playing primarily second base, Gillerman batted .228 with four doubles, one triple, one home run and 15 RBI. Gillerman led the team with 11 sacrifices.

He ended up getting 136 at bats on the season.

The Border Cats closed out the season by taking one of three games against Mankato in Minnesota last weekend.

Game one was a continuation of the July 5 game in Mankato and the Cats went on to shut out the Moondogs, 6-0.

Gillerman helped the Cats with a three-run home run in the contest.

The Border Cats dropped the second game of the series, 7-0, and lost in the finale, 9-2.

Gillerman had an impressive sophomore season for Irvine Valley this past spring.

He was selected first team all-conference after hitting a team-best .367 on the season with 51 hits, 10 doubles and 26 RBI.

He ranked eighth in the conference in batting average, tied for eighth in hits, tied for 11th in doubles and tied for 16th in RBI.

Gillerman had 15 games with at least two hits this season and eight games with three hits or more.

He went 4 for 5 with one RBI in Irvine Valley's 12-6 win at Golden West on April 2. Gillerman was 3 for 5 with three RBI in a 17-2 victory at West LA on Feb. 26.

And he went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and five RBI in a 12-5 win for Irvine Valley over Orange Coast on April 7.

Gillerman helped Irvine Valley to a record of 17-19 overall and a 8-13 record in conference this season.

He was a two-year starter at shortstop for the Lasers.

Gillerman, who prepped at Canyon High, was part of one of IVC's best-ever seasons in 2015. The Lasers won their final six games to end the regular season and made the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
