No. 6 in the state women's volleyball team hosts Santa Ana

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team, named No. 6 in the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association State Poll this week, takes on Santa Ana Wednesday night at home at 6 p.m.

The Lasers, under former IVC star indoor and beach player and first-year head coach Anna Unke, have won nine straight contests and lead the Orange Empire Conference by a match over Saddleback.

IVC has a record of 15-2 overall and is 9-1 in the OEC.

Irvine Valley went on the road last Friday and swept No. 10 Cypress for the second time this year.

IVC came out on top, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16.

Sophomore opposite Ava Guenther finished with eight kills and three aces, sophomore outside hitter Tessa Marocco had six kills and five digs and freshman outside hitter Tatum Pongs added six kills and four digs.

Sophomore middle blocker Avery Bennett ended with five kills and sophomore middle blocker Natalia Brandlin had five kills and five blocks for the Lasers. Brandlin was named IVC's athlete of the week for the second time this week for her perforances against Golden West and Cypress.

Sophomore Mia Bertolone ran the offense with 30 assists and added nine digs.

And freshman libero Audrey Fowler led IVC in digs with 21.

Marocco ranks fourth in the conference in kills at 3.76 and second in aces at 0.72 per set.

Brandlin is first in the OEC at blocks per set at 1.26, Bertolone ranks first in assists at 11.12 per set, Fowler is first in the OEC in digs at 4.51 per set and Guenther is seventh in conference in kills at 2.80.

Santa Ana has a record of 4-12 overall and is 2-7 in the Orange Empire Conference.

The Dons fell to Saddleback, 25-12, 25-14, 25-17 last Friday on the road.

Camille Birrer finished with six kills and Jenna Hoppe had four kills for the Dons.

Taylor Vagana led the team in digs with six and Madeline Castillo had 17 assists for Santa Ana.

On the year, Birrer is averaging 2.37 kills and 2.29 digs per set, Castillo is averaging 6.44 assists per set, Karen Salazar is averaging 1.75 kills and 2.23 digs per set for Santa Ana.

The Lasers play at Saddleback in another conference match on Friday at Saddleback.
