Volleyball team starts second round of OEC play Wednesday

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team hosts Golden West to start the second round of Orange Empire Conference action on Wednesday at home at 6 p.m.

The Lasers have moved into first place in the OEC and are ranked seventh in the state and third in Southern California in this week's coaches rankings.

IVC dropped its first match of conference to Golden West, but have been on a roll since and won seven straight contests.

Irvine Valley has a record of 13-2 overall and is 7-1 in conference. The Lasers' only two losses are to Golden West and No. 4 San Diego Mesa.

Five of the seven wins during IVC's streak have been sweeps.

Irvine Valley went on the road and defeated Riverside, 25-15, 25-16, 25-17 last Friday.

The Lasers hit .292 as a team in the contest. Sophomore opposite Ava Guenther finished with 12 kills, six digs and five blocks. 

Sophomore middle blocker Natalia Brandlin ended with nine kills, three blocks and hit .375, sophomore all-state athlete of the week Tessa Marocco finished with eight kills, six aces and eight digs, sophomore setter Mia Bertolone had 32 assists and nine digs and freshman libero Audrey Fowler contributed 13 digs for the Lasers.

Marocco ranks third in the conference in kills at 3.91 and first in aces at 0.77 per set, Brandlin is first in the OEC at blocks per set at 1.20, Bertolone ranks first in assists at 11.12 per set, Fowler is first in the OEC in digs at 4.37 per set and Guenther is seventh in conference in kills at 2.77 per set.

Golden West has a record of 8-5 overall and is 4-4 and is in sixth place in conference.

The Rustlers swept Santa Ana, 25-13, 25-12, 25-13 last Friday night to snap a three-match skid in OEC play.

Golden West did knock off the Lasers, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 25-20 in the opening match of conference play on Sept. 15.

Sabrina Phinizy finished with 28 kills and Hayden Murray had 39 assists for Golden West in that victory.

On the season, Phinizy is averaging 4.81 kills and 3.19 digs per set.

Maci Hendry averages 2.05 kills and 2.24 digs per set, Hayden Murray is averaging 8.12 assists per set and Emely Heredia averages 4.02 dis for the Rustlers.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday in another key match at No. 10 in the state Cypress at 6 p.m.
