Volleyball team to face Santa Barbara City Wednesday at home

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team is at home again on Wednesday night, taking on Santa Barbara City at 6 p.m.

The Lasers are ranked No. 5 in the state for the second straight week. IVC has a record of 5-1 overall.

Irvine Valley started the season with five wins in a row, but lost its first match of the season last Friday in the last contest of the San Diego Mesa Quad event.

San Diego Mesa came out on top, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23.

Mesa was ranked No. 2 in the state this week and has a record of 9-0 overall.

IVC swept MiraCosta earlier in the day on Friday.

Against MiraCosta, sophomore outside hitter Tessa Marocco and freshman opposite Tatum Pongs each finished with 11 kills and sophomore middle blockers Natalia Brandlin and Avery Bennett each had six kills.

Brandlin also chipped in three blocks.

Sophomore setter Mia Bertolone ended with 33 assists and five digs and freshman libero Audrey Fowler had 25 digs.

And against Mesa, Marocco had 12 kills and six digs, Pongs ended with 10 kills and 11 digs, Bertolone had 34 assists and 15 digs and Fowler finished with 20 digs.

Santa Barbara City has a record of 3-5 overall.

The Vaqueros have dropped three straight matches, falling to Pasadena City and San Diego Mesa in four sets the SBCC Quad on Sept. 2 and then losing at Long Beach City, 25-20, 25-21, 25-14, last Wednesday.

Evan Ybaraa and Kira Little led the Vaqueros with eight kills apiece against Long Beach City, while Chaya Clemons and Heidi Collins each contributed six kills.

Natalie Lercari-Sullivan ended the night with 22 assists and 10 digs.

On the year, Ybarra averages 2.43 kills per set, Little is averaging 2.42 kills and Collins averages 2.24 kills per set.

Lercari-Sullivan averages 7.25 assists and 2.92 digs per set and Gabby Russell averages 4.57 digs per set. Hanna is averaging 1.11 blocks per set.
