Women's volleyball team suffers tough four-set loss at GWC

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team suffered just its second loss of the season and first in Orange Empire Conference play with a four-set defeat at Golden West on Friday night.

The Lasers, ranked No. 5 in the state the last two weeks, saw their record slip to 6-2 overall. Golden West improved to 5-1 overall with the win in the conference opener.

Irvine Valley had its chances all night, but Golden West was able to close out the first, third and fourth sets.

IVC hit just .205 in the match.

The Lasers were paced by sophomore outside hitter Tessa Marocco with 15 kills, 16 digs and four aces.

Sophomore opposite Ava Guenther added 10 kills and five blocks, freshman outside hitter Tatum Pongs and sophomore middle blocker Natalia Brandlin each finished with eight kills. Pongs chipped in eight digs and Brandlin had four blocks for IVC.

Sophomore setter Mia Bertolone contributed 45 assists and 10 digs and freshman libero Audrey Fowler ended with nine digs.

The Lasers are back in action, against a top-10 ranked team in the state - Cypress - next Wednesday at home at 6 p.m.
