Women's volleyball team hosts MiraCosta Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team will look for its fourth win in a row to start the 2023 season when it hosts MiraCosta on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Irvine Valley is off to a 3-0 start and was ranked No. 5 in the state (second in So. Cal.) in the first coaches' poll of the season, which was released on Monday.

The Lasers have swept Canyons, Mt. San Antonio and Moorpark.

The Lasers defeated No. 13 Moorpark, 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 last Friday at home. Sophomore outside hitter Tessa Marocco led the way with 18 kills and nine digs. She also hit .533.

Sophomore setter Mia Bertolone had 34 assists and 12 digs, freshman libero Audrey Fowler contributed 17 digs and sophomore middle blocker Natalia Brandlin had a team-best six blocks.

On the year so far, Marocco leads the state in kills per set at 6.00. She is also hitting .440, which is fourth in the state.

Freshman outside hitter Ava Guenther is averaging 2.50 kills, Brandlin averages 2.22 kills, 1.17 blocks and is hitting .417, Fowler averages 3.89 digs and Bertolone is averaging 12.11 assists per set, which is tops in the state.

IVC takes part in the San Diego Mesa Quad on Friday, playing MiraCosta again and then host Mesa.

MiraCosta has a record of 1-2 overall.

The Spartans dropped two matches in the Pasadena City tri-event to open the season.

MiraCosta then defeated Friends University JV, 25-15, 25-9, 25-14 last Thursday.

The Spartans were led by a balanced offensive attack from Daysha Halbert, Ana Lara, Alexis Jones and Eesha Chun-Dela Cruz and setters Cameron-Jade Caimpon and Eden Thomas.
