Women's volleyball team stays in first place with win over GWC

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team, ranked No. 7 in the state and third in Southern California, started the second round of Orange Empire Conference play with a great performance.

The Lasers, who lost at Golden West in four sets in the opening match of conference play, beat the Rustlers, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23 on Wednesday night at home.

IVC battled all night to improve its record to 14-2 overall and 8-1 in conference. The Lasers have won eight matches in a row.

Irvine Valley got a big night from sophomore middle blocker Natalia Brandlin. She finished with 15 kills and had a hitting percentage of .609.

Brandlin also added an impressive seven blocks.

Sophomore opposite hitter Ava Guenther and sophomore outside hitter Tessa Marocco each finished with 13 kills. Marocco also had two aces and 13 digs.

Sophomore setter Mia Bertolone ran the offense with 48 assists and added eight digs and freshman libero Audrey Fowler ended with 17 digs for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley is back in action on Friday in another big match. IVC plays at No. 10 Cypress at 6 p.m.
