Irvine Valley's baseball team battled against Grossmont in a game between two of the teams with the best records in Southern California.
The game was back and forth the whole way with IVC taking a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning, but Grossmont scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to walk off with a 6-5 victory.
Irvine Valley's record went to 6-3 overall. Grossmont stayed unbeaten at 6-0.
The Lasers went ahead in the ninth.
Sophomore outfielder Kade Murray doubled to lead off the inning. Freshman Chris Jones pinch ran for Murray. He moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Chase Quezada.
Jones then scored on a wild pitch.
But Grossmont found two runs in the bottom of the innings IVC having recorded two outs.
Three straight singles, including an RBI hit to center by Nico Newhan tied the game and then an error by the Lasers allowed the Griffins to plate the winning- un and earn the victory.
For Irvine Valley, sophomore third baseman Shaun McCaghren went 3 for 4 with a run scored and freshman catcher Shane Flynn went 0 for 1 with two walks and a run.
Sophomore starting right-handed pitcher AJ Roettger went 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
He had a no decision in the contest.
Freshman lefty Christian Viggiano took the loss. He pitched two innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.
Irvine Valley plays again on Saturday, hosting West LA at 2 p.m. The game has been moved back two hours to give the field more time to dry after the recent rain.
