Irvine Valley's baseball team won the first game of a doubleheader, 8-2, over LA Mission and then closed by holding on with a 7-6 victory in the second game.
The Lasers moved their record to 12-5 overall heading into the start of Orange Empire Conference play.
IVC, ranked No. 23 in the state, starts OEC play at No. 20 Golden West on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
On Saturday, Irvine Valley took the lead early and then scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away.
But it started with the effort on the mound from sophomore left-hander Jackson Chastain. He was in command through his seven solid innings.
Chastain went seven innings and gave up just two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
Freshman lefty Christian Viggiano threw two scoreless innings to end the game for the Lasers.
At the plate, freshman shortstop Jake Amundson stayed hot, going 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI.
Sophomore right fielder Kade Murray went 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs and two RBI, sophomore second baseman Chase Quezada walked, stole a base and scored two runs and freshman center fielder Sam Tucci had two hits, including a double for the Lasers.
The second game went down to the wire in a seven-inning contest.
Irvine Valley was in control until late.
Mission scored two runs in the top of the sixth and then a run in the seventh to make it a 7-6 game.
And then Mission had the tying run on third base with two outs in the top of the seventh.
Feshman third baseman Josh Gutierrez then made one of the best defensive plays of the season to end the game.
He leaped and caught a hard line drive off the bat of Dominic Ramirez and threw over to sophomore first baseman Jackson Snitko to complete the double play.
Sophomore right-hander Zack Marker earned his third save of the season, pitching two-thirds of an inning with no runs and one walk.
Viggiano returned to start the second game and went four innings. He allowed one run (unearned) on three hits with two strikeouts.
Highlights on offense included Amundson going 1 for 3 with a run scored and stealing two bases, including home plate, Quezada adding two runs and a stolen base and Tucci going 1 for 2 with a run scored and two RBI.
Snitko also stood out with three walks, two runs scored and a stolen base.
