Irvine Valley's soccer team took an early lead in an Orange Empire Conference match at home on Tuesday afternoon.
But Cypress answered with two goals in the first half, and despite IVC having more chances, the Chargers came away with a 2-1 win.
Irvine Valley's record went to 2-7-1 overall, while Cypress improved to 4-3-3 overall and 1-0-2 in the OEC.
IVC freshman forward Mason Tracey gave IVC a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a penalty kick. It was Tracey's first goal of the year.
Cypress evened the score in the 17th minute on a goal by Alex Gomez off of a corner kick from Isaac Morales. The ball went across the box and to Morales, who sent it in.
The Chargers then took the lead for good in the 26th minute. Morales added to his assist with a goal off a pass from Daniel Almaraz.
Irvine Valley had its chances, especially when it pushed forward toward the end of the match, but coudn't find a tying goal.
Morales ended up with nine shots, including five on goal for Cypress. Newman had five shots with three on goal for the Lasers.
Cypress out-shot IVC, 14-13, in the back and forth contest.
Irvine Valley freshman goalies Josh Simonton and Rolando Hernandez each played a half with Simonton making two saves and Hernandez finishing with four saves in the final 45 minutes.
It was IVC's fifth one-goal loss of the season in 10 contests.
The Lasers play again at the top team in the conference, Fullerton, on Friday in a 6 p.m. night game at Fullerton.
