The Irvine Valley men's soccer team scored early and then held on for its first clean sheet of the year Tuesday at home with a 1-0 win over Golden West.
IVC moved up to fourth in the Orange Empire Conference standings with the win.
The Lasers moved their record to 5-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the OEC.
Golden West went to 1-8-3 overall and 1-4-2 in conference play.
Irvine Valley dominated in the first half with 11 shots on goal.
And the Lasers got on the board with a goal by freshman midfielder Luke Newman in the 15th minute off of an assist by freshman forward Marcio Costa.
Newman hit it to the right side of the goal.
IVC had plenty of more chances in the first half with opportunites from sophomore forward Armon Haghighat, Costa, freshman forward Mason Tracey and freshman forward Maddox Adamcik.
The Lasers had to hold on in the second half with freshman goalie Rolando Hernandez making several outstanding saves as Golden West pushed forward.
Hernandez made a kick save on a one-on-one in the 50th minute and then made three more saves late in the game to earn the shutout.
He finished with six saves overall.
Irvine Valley plays again on Friday in a big match at Saddleback at 3 p.m.
