Women's basketball team seeded third, opens playoffs Friday

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team has been named the third seed in the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

IVC will host No. 14 Cerritos on Friday at 7 p.m. in a second-round match-up.

Opening-round games featuring the final four teams into the field are on Wednesday.

Irvine Valley is coming off a memorable regular season. The Lasers finished with a 25-3 overall record and a 12-0 mark in the Orange Empire Conference.

IVC won its first conference title since the 1998-99 season and had its first ever undefeated run through conference play.

The Lasers led the conference, giving up just 53.3 points per game during the regular season.

They are led by sophomore center Breanna Turner, who averages 14.3 points, 11.7 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. She ranked second in the conference in rebounds.

Freshman guard Tara Casey averages 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds and Jordan Coleman averages 10.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.0 steals per contest.

Irvine Valley enters the playoffs on a 13-game win streak.

Cerritos has a record of 18-12 overall. It enters the post-season with losses by a combined seven points in its last two games, including an overtime setback against Long Beach City in the regular season finale.

Prior to that, Cerritos had won four straight games.

Cerritos has five players that average at least five points a game, led by Cassidy Carrillo and Aissha Baldwin each at 9.7 points per contest. Baldwin also averages 10.1 rebounds per game.

On the year, the Falcons have a 3-6 record against teams in the Southern California Regional Playoffs, while the Lasers are 11-2 against teams in the post-season.

The winner of Friday's game between Irvine Valley and Cerritos will take on the winner of the 11th-seeded Mt. San Jacinto sixth-seeded Bakersfield and it will take place Wednesday, March 4 at the home of the highest seed.

Tickets for the game are $10.00 for general admission and $8.00 for students/faculty/staff with ID, seniors (55 above) and children under 12.
