Women's basketball team cruises in win at Orange Coast

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team used a fast start to win its Orange Empire Conference opener, 57-46, at Orange Coast on Wednesday night.

The Lasers opened the game, out-scoring the Pirates, 26-4, over the first 10 minutes of play.

IVC never trailed in the contest.

Irvine Valley, which is ranked No. 6 in the state and No. 4 in Southern California, improved its record to 14-3 overall, while Orange Coast fell to 3-12 overall.

Irvine Valley was led by sophomore center Breanna Turner, who finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Tara Casey had 17 points, sophomore forward Conerie Brennan chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and six assists and freshman guard Jordan Coleman added six points and 10 rebounds.

The Lasers helped hold Orange Coast to just 28.1 percent shooting (16 of 57) from the floor in the game.

Irvine Valley shot 39.2 percent (20 of 51) and had 17 assists on its 20 made baskets.

Irvine Valley led, 31-20, at halftime.

Orange Coast rallied late and pulled within 49-45 with just over three minutes left in the game, but the Lasers held OCC to just one point the rest of the way.

Irvine Valley has a bye on Friday from conference action and plays again next Wednesday at Saddleback at 5 p.m.
