Women's basketball team drops just second game of season

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team had its eight-game win streak snapped in the championship game of the Erin Tomlinson Coast Classic on Saturday at Orange Coast.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 2 in Southern California, fell to No. 4 Palomar, 74-55.

The Lasers were shooting for their third straight tournament title after capturing the Chaffey and Irvine Valley events the past two weekends.

The loss dropped Irvine Valley's record to 11-2 overall. Palomar improved to 11-1. The Comets had been ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 2 in Southern California two weeks ago.

The 55 points were the second-lowest scoring output of the season so far for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers shot just 38.2 percent (21 of 55) from the field in the contest, including only 22.7 percent (5 of 22) in the first half.

Irvine Valley was down, 27-20, at halftime and got out-scored, 47-35, in the second half.

For the game, Irvine Valley was also just 2 of 15 (13.3 percent) from the three-point line.

And Palomar out-rebounded IVC, 42-31.

Irvine Valley was paced by freshman guard Jordan Coleman with 18 points and three steals and freshman guard Tara Casey with 10 points.

Sophomore forward Conerie Brennan and sophomore forward Breanna Turner each finished with eight points. Turner also had 15 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Freshman guard Erika Mercado came off the bench with seven points for IVC.

Turner and Coleman were named all-tournament for Irvine Valley.

Palomar was paced by Keisha Cox with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, Melissa Allen with 14 points and Jessica Scott with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Cox was named the tournament's MVP after finishing the tourney with 72 points, 33 rebounds and 15 assists.

Irvine Valley will play again Dec. 29-30 in a crossover tournament event at College of the Sequoias.

The Lasers will have their next home game on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 when they take on Moorpark at 5 p.m.
