Women's basketball team captures Chaffey Tournament

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team won its fourth game in a row overall and third straight in the Chafffey Tournament on Sunday to win a title.

The Lasers, ranked No. 17 in the state in the latest CCCAA poll, defeated Orange Empire Conference rival Saddleback, 63-56, in the championship game of the Chaffey event.

Sophomore center Breanna Turner had 19 points and 18 rebounds, freshman guard Tara Casey finished with 12 points and freshman guard Jordan Coleman had nine points in the win for the Lasers.

IVC led, 31-19, at halftime and held on throughout the second half.

The Lasers held Saddleback to just 31.7 shooting from the field in the game and out-rebounded the Gauchos, 45-33.

Turner was named the tournament's MVP, while Casey and Coleman were each named all-tournament selections.

Irvine Valley defeated three strong teams in the event, including two that were ranked in the top 10 in the state in the latest CCCAA poll.

The Lasers handed No. 2 Fullerton its first loss of the season, winning, 67-48, in the semifinals on Saturday.

IVC dominated the paint, out-scoring the Hornets, 28-8, in the middle.

Irvine Valley lead wire to wire, shooting 44.6 percent from the floor compared to a 28.8 pecent shooting effort for Fullerton.

Turner and Casey each had 16 for the Lasers, while Turner added 14 rebounds.

Irvine Valley beat No. 10 Mt. San Jacinto, 54-47, in the opening round on Friday.

The Lasers built up a nine-point lead (29-20) at the break and never looked back against Mt. San Jacinto.

The Lasers out-scored the Eagles, 22-14, in the paint, and made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to keep Mt. San Jacinto at bay.

Coleman and Conerie Brennan each had a team high 10 points for the Lasers, while Turner reeled in 11 rebounds.

The three wins improved Irvine Valley's record to 6-1 overall.

Irvine Valley's lone loss on the season was a 1-point (66-65) overtime defeat to East Los Angeles in the Saddleback Tournament.

The Lasers play again Thursday night in the opening game of their own Irvine Valley Tournament.

Irvine Valley plays El Camino at 6 p.m.
