Women's basketball team defeats Golden West by 60 in OEC game

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team, ranked No. 7 in the state, won its ninth straight game and improved its record to 18-2 overall and 7-0 in the Orange Empire Conference with a very comfortable 101-41 victory over Golden West at home on Friday night.

The 60-point triumph followed a 55-point (96-41) win over Santa Ana on Wednesday night on the road and a 38-point (95-57) victory over Fullerton on Monday at home.

Irvine Valley has out-scored its opponents this week by 153 points heading into a big conference game with Orange Coast on Sunday at home at 3 p.m.

On Friday, IVC had little trouble with Golden West.

The Lasers led, 23-10, after the first quarter, 53-20, at the half and, 85-31, heading into the fourth quarter.

Most of the Irvine Valley starters sat in the fourth period.

IVC shot 42.1 percent (40 of 95) from the field in the game, but keys were helping force 31 Golden West turnovers and getting out in transition.

The Lasers out-scored Golden West, 41-5, on turnovers, 60-10, in the paint and, 24-7 on second chance points.

Five Irvine Valley players scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Morgan Higgins, who had 25 points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Sophomore guard Paola Roa added 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals and sophomore guard Jessica Suruor had 16 points (four three-pointers) and four steals.

Freshman forward Sarah Matossian chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, as well as four assists.

And freshman post player Paea Tafea also finished with a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also had a season-high six blocks.

Sophomore guard Samantha Uehara came off the bench with eight points and five rebounds to help in the IVC victory.

Golden West (10-9, 0-6) was paced by Bella Caiazzo with nine points and five rebounds. Ashley Gibson had seven points and four rebounds off the bench for the Rustlers.

As mentioned, IVC turns around and plays Orange Coast, which is third in the OEC, on Sunday at home at 3 p.m. 

It is the fourth game of the week for the Lasers.

Unfortunately, there will be no fans allowed in attendance per district and college policy.
