Women's basketball hosts Canyons with trip to state on the line

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team is one game away from the California Community College Athletics Association State Championship.

And it comes down to Saturday night.

The Lasers, seeded second in the So. Cal. regional playoffs, host No. 7 College of the Canyons at 7 p.m.

Spectators are welcome with social distancing and masks are required.

Ticket pricing is $12 (adults) and $8 (students and children). No conference passes will be accepted.

Parking is free next to the tennis courts in Lot 9.

Irvine Valley started the playoffs with a  win over No. 18 Cerritos in the second-round of the playoffs on Thursday night at home. IVC received a bye in the opening round.

On Thursday, the Lasers' biggest advantage was 52 points (91-39) after a three-pointer by freshnman guard Andrea Garcia with 41 seconds left in the game.

Sophomore guard Paola Roa led Irvine Valley with 25 points and 10 rebounds. 

She was one of four Laser players to score in double figures on the night.

Freshman forward Sarah Matossian added 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks, sophomore guard Jessica Suruor finished with 13 points, five assists and two steals and sophomore point guard and Orange Empire Conference MVP Morgan Higgins contributed 12 points, five assists and four steals.

The Lasers shot 42.2 percent (35 of 83) from the field as a team and held Cerritos to just 29.6 percent shooting as a squad.

IVC out-rebounded the Falcons, 55-37, and turned Cerritos over 25 times

Canyons defeated No. 10 Orange Coast, 69-60, in the second round on Thursday at Canyons.

Canyons freshman Lulu Salloom, who was named her conference's player of the year, finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.

Justice Walters added 10 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals and Monique Febles had 16 points and three rebounds for the Cougars.
