Women's basketball team runs away with strong third quarter

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team used a torrid third quarter to pull away and beat LA Valley, 72-48, on the road Tuesday night.

The win improved IVC's record to 5-1 overall and LA Valley went to 2-2.

IVC trailed, 15-13, at the end of the first quarter. The Lasers played better in the second quarter and took a 36-32 lead at the break.

It was the third quarter that made the difference. IVC out-scored LA Valley, 22-6, in the quarter to build a 58-38 advantage.

In the third period, Irvine Valley made 11 of 16 shots. Sophomore guard Jessica Suruor did much of the damage. She went 7 of 9 from the floor and finished with 14 points in the quarter.

Irvine Valley cruised the rest of the way and won by 24 points.

Surruor had a game-high 21 points to lead the Lasers.

Freshman forward Sarah Matossian added 19 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and five steals for IVC.

Sophomore guard Paola Roa ended with eight points and five assists and sophomore guard Morgan Higgins contributed eight points, four assists and four steals.

IVC shot 48.4 percent (30 of 62) as a team in the contest. The Lasers also had 19 assists.

Irvine Valley plays again next Friday when it opens play in the IVC Classic. The Lasers play Mt. San Jacinto at 7 p.m. Rio Hondo and Cerritos will start the event with a game at 5 p.m.
