Women's basketball team races to victory over Santa Ana

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team trailed, 4-3, early at Santa Ana Wednesday night.

But the Lasers proceeded to go on a 27-2 run, led, 30-9, at the end of the first quarter and went on to a 96-41 win in an Orange Empire game.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 7 in the state, improved its record to 17-2 overall and 6-0 in conference.

The Dons scored on a layup by Megan Roach with 36 seconds into the game to take a 2-0 lead and Santa Ana went up, 4-3, on a jumper by Sonia Sanchez. 

IVC then scored 27 of the next 29 points to take over.

Irvine Valley led, 30-9, after the first quarter after making 13 of 21 shots (61.9 percent). The Lasers also had nine steals in the opening 10 minutes. 

Laser sophomore guard Paola Roa had 10 points, four rebounds and three steals and sophomore guard Morgan Higgins added 10 points in the first quarter.

IVC led, 51-20, at the end of the first half and, 72-29, after three quarters of play.

For the game, Irvine Valley shot 51.4 percent (38 of 74) as a team in the game and out-rebounded Santa Ana, 46-32.

Irvine Valley was paced by Roa with 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. 

Freshman forward Sarah Matossian added 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals, Higgins had 14 points and four assists and sophomore guard Jessica Suruor finished with 14 points, four rebounds, three asssists and four steals.

Freshman forward Paea Tafea chipped in six points, five rebounds, four steals and four blocks for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting Golden West in a conference game at 6 p.m. Unfortunately no spectators are allowed per district and college policy.
