Basketball Alumni Report: Austin Carter stands out for Hawks

Former Irvine Valley men's basketball player Austin Carter had a standout junior season this past year at NCAA Division II Holy Names University.

The former Sonora High star averaged 9.6 points and 4.9 rebounds during the 2021-22 season. Both ranked second on the squad for the Hawks.

He also shot 53.9 percent from the field (111 of 206), which led Holy Names.

Carter scored in double figures in 13 games, including the last three games of the year.

He scored a season-high 22 points on 10 of 15 shooting in 34 minutes in a conference game at Academy of the Art on Feb. 9, 2022.

Carter, a 6-5 post player, helped IVC to a special 2019-20 season.

IVC had a record of 17-13 overall and reached the California Community College Athletic Association South Regional Playoffs.

IVC went in as a No. 20 seed and pulled off a 67-64 upset win at No. 13 Chaffey in the first round. The Lasers won behind 17 points from Carter.

The Lasers snapped Chaffey's 17-game win streak.

IVC went on to challenge Santa Monica in the second round and rallied, but fell, 53-46, at West LA College.

Carter was named the team's most valuable player.

The former Sonora High player averaged 11.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for the Lasers overall. He ranked second on the team in scoring and first in rebounds and shot 53.6 percent from the field.

Carter is a senior this upcoming season and Holy Names starts the season with an exhibition at Pacific Union College on Nov. 3.
