Men's basketball team drops second in a row to Santiago Canyon

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team couldn't keep up with Santiago Canyon from the start on Monday at home in an Orange Empire Conference contest.

The Hawks raced out to a 33-8 lead and never looked back in a 84-68 victory.

It was Santiago Canyon's second straight win over the Lasers. The Hawks defeated IVC, 81-71, at Santiago Canyon last Thursday.

With the two wins, Santiago Canyon improved its record to 20-5 overall and 10-4 in conference. Irvine Valley's record dropped to 16-10 overall and 8-7 in conference.

Monday night, the Hawks shot an impressive 61.7 percent (29 of 47) from the field as a team, including 45.8 percent (11 of 24) from three-point range.

Irvine Valley went 23 of 60 (38.3 percent) from the field.

The Lasers were led by sophomore guard JT Robinson, who finished with 21 points and four assists. Sophomore guard Aaron Strings added 14 points and two steals and freshman guard Gavin O'Neill had 11 points for IVC.

Santiago Canyon got 24 points and seven rebounds from Erik Howlin, 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists from Josh Griffin and 12 points and three blocks from David Agba.

Irvine Valley plays its final game of the regular season on Wednesday at Golden West at 5 p.m.
