JJason Garey has been named the new head coach for Irvine Valley after coaching the IVC women’s squad for the last two seasons.
The IVC Women’s basketball team accumulated a record of 42-17 in Garey’s two seasons as the head coach.
In his tenure as the head women’s coach, the Lasers had six girls move on to play at a four-year institution, including three at NCAA Division 2 schools.
Prior to coaching the women’s team, Garey had been on staff for legendary IVC men’s coach Jerry Hernandez for 14 years.
In his tenure as an assistant and associate head coach the Lasers accumulated a record of 214-134.
Garey had responsibilities in recruiting, player development, weight training, academic progress, and daily duties in defensive game planning.
In several seasons the Lasers were ranked in the top 10 of the state in defensive efficiency. In Garey’s fourteen seasons with the Men’s basketball program, 51 players went on to four-year institutions.
Nine of those players went on to play at an NCAA Division 1 school including: Northern Arizona, Pacific, Sacramento State, Cal Poly SLO, Utah Valley, and Arizona.
Garey was a standout player at one of Irvine Valley’s biggest rivals, Orange Coast, from 2001-04.
He made 111 three-pointers in the 2002 season, which was the second most in the state that year and broke the school record for three-pointers in a season.
He was also a co-captain and earned honorable mention Orange Empire Conference honors during the 2003-04 season.
Garey is the all-time career leader in 3-pointers made at OCC. Garey went on to play at Cal State East Bay from 2004-06.
He helped his team reach the Conference title game in 2005.
During the 2005-06 campaign Garey helped the pioneers earn a ranking as high as 12th in the national for NAIA Division II during the 2005-06 season.
Before college basketball, Garey was a star player here in Irvine at University High.
He helped led the Trojans to the 2001 Pacific Coast League title in his senior season.
Garey was named the Pacific Coast League’s MVP, the Irvine City co-MVP, second team All-CIF and second team All-Orange County.
Garey also played in the Orange County All-Star game in 2001.
In his senior season, Garey averaged 23.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Garey broke the Orange County record for three-pointers in a season with 145 three pointers made.
That came out to an average of 5.3 three-pointers made per game.
In his senior season he also tied the county record for three-pointers in a game with 11 against Palmdale High School in a Playoff game.
Garey graduated from Cal State East Bay with a degree in Kinesiology.
He went on to earn a Teaching Credential in Physical Education at Cal State Fullerton.
Garey also earned his master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine.
He is a proud husband to Sarah, a special-ed teacher in the Irvine Unified School District, and father to his three sons Kylan, Keaton and Krue.
