Men's basketball team upsets Santiago Canyon on the road

The Irvine Valley men's basketball team earned its 12th win of the season and pulled out one of its biggest victories of the year Wednesday night at Santiago Canyon.

Irvine Valley moved its record to 12-6 overall and leveled its Orange Empire Conference mark at 3-3 with a 77-69 triumph over the Hawks.

Santiago Canyon (13-5, 4-2) was ranked No. 18 in the state.

IVC was led by sophomore guard Roman Swizek, who finished with 24 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field, 4 of 5 from three-point range and making 4 of 5 from the free throw line.

Freshman forward Josiah Reed had one of his best games of the season, recording 14 points, six rebounds and two steals, and sophomore post player Jesse Stines ended with 11 points and four rebounds. Freshman guard Ammon Allan had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists and sophomore guard David Ogunlade had a solid game on the defensive end with nine rebounds.

Irvine Valley led by eight points at the half and ended up winning by eight.

IVC held Santiago Canyon to just 5 of 20 from three-point range. Kai Smith paced the Hawks with 19 points and six rebounds. Tony Colley and Chico Lopez each scored 14 points for SCC.

Irvine Valley also received 34 points from its bench.

The win was Irvine Valley coach Jerry's 499th in his career at the college.

The Lasers will try and pick up the 500th win for coach on Friday in a conference game at home against Golden West at 6 p.m.
