Volleyball team looks for its third win of season Friday night

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team goes for its third win in a row on Friday night at home when it takes on Miramar at 5 p.m.

The Lasers, after going undefeated and winning the state title in 2017, are off to a solid start to 2018.

IVC swept College of the Canyons, 25-23, 25-13, 25-15 on the road Wednesday.

The Lasers hit an impressive .367 on the night, making just 10 total team hitting errors on 88 attempts.

Freshman setter Truth Hafey ran the offense with 37 assists. She also added nine digs.

Freshman outside hitter Gabriela Griego had 13 kills and hit .462, sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni finished with 10 kills and hit .409, freshman outside hitter Lea Kruse had eight kills 15 digs and sophomore middle blocker Kylie Miller ended with six kills, three blocks and hit .417.

Sophomore libero Renata Bath contributed 13 digs and freshman defensive specialist Alaina Gendale had six digs.

IVC is hitting .330 as a team over its first two matches.

Griego already ranks second in the conference at 4.00 kills per set and Kruse is second in the conference at 4.17 digs per set.

Miller is second in hitting percentage at .393 and second in blocks at 1.33 per set and Hafey paces the conference at 11.33 assists per set.

Miramar is a new program in California this year.

The Jets are off to a 1-3 start with a four-set victory over Southwestern last Saturday as part of a quad tourney at Imperial Valley.

Mark Smith is the head coach of the women's squad.

He is also the associate head coach of the men's volleyball team at Miramar and helped lead the Jets to the 2017 and 2018 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference titles.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday at Palomar at 5 p.m. in its final nonconference contest of the year.

The Lasers, who are favored to repeat as Orange Empire Conference champions in the SID poll released this week, open conference action next Friday with a home game against Saddleback at 6 p.m.
