Irvine Valley women's volleyball player Alyssa Vortouni has committed to play beach volleyball at NCAA Division I Grand Canyon University in the fall.

Vortouni, who was a two-year star in both indoor and beach volleyball for the Lasers, is a preferred walk-on for the Antelopes.

Vortouni had a super successful career at Irvine Valley. With Vortouni a main contributor in 2017 and 2018, the indoor volleyball team had a record of 48-2.

As a freshman outside hitter in 2017, she helped IVC win a California Community College Athletic Association state title in indoor volleyball. The team finished with a record of 27-0 overall and 16-0 in conference.

This past season, Vortouni led IVC to another state-tournament appearance. The squad won its second straight Orange Empire Conference title and finished with a record of 21-2 overall and 14-1 in conference.

She was named first team all-conference and averaged 2.91 kills and hit .339 with 0.61 blocks per set and 1.16 digs per set.

Vortouni had nine matches with at least 10 kills, including a season-high of 19 kills and a .739 hitting percentage and IVC's sweep at Santiago Canyon on Sept. 28.

Showing her consistency all year, Vortouni contributed at least seven kills in 18 matches on the season.

Vortouni also helped the Irvine Valley beach volleyball team to back-to-back conference titles and two straight state tournament apperances.

In 2018, IVC had a record of 12-9 overall and went 6-0 in conference.

And this past year, the squad had a recordof 17-8 overall and 10-0 in conference action.

In addition, Vortouni was named one of the co-most valuable players of the conference. She shared the honors with pairs teammate Emilie Austin as well as IVC teammates Renata Bath and Lea Kruse.

Vortouni and Austin upset the Cypress top-seeded duo of Khamis Berneker and Brittany Zavala, 21-13, 21-13, in a semifinal of the conference pairs championship to make the final.

Vortouni and Austin ended up qualifying through regionals for a spot in the individual pairs state event in Chula Vista.

Irvine Valley's team finished ranked third in the state in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association CCCAA Beach Volleyball Coaches Poll of the year.

Vortouni, who attended Irvine High before arriving at IVC, is headed to a Grand Canyon squad that had a solid record of 20-11 overall last year. The Antelopes were part of the top-20 national poll for much of the season.

And Grand Canyon beat the likes of Tulane, Georgia State, Stanford, Florida Atlantic and Long Beach State, who were all ranked this past season.
