Top-seeded women's volleyball team starts postseason tonight

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in the state, begins the 2018 postseason on Tuesday night.

The Lasers, who have a record of 18-1 overall and won the Orange Empire Conference, start play against No. 16 Pasadena City at 6 p.m. at home.

IVC was riding a 45-match win streak before falling to OEC rival Cypress on the road in the regular season finale, 25-18, 17-25, 15-25, 25-16, 15-8, last Wednesday.

Freshman outside hitter Lea Kruse and sophomore libero Renata Bath were named the co-MVP's of the Orange Empire Conference this year.

Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni and freshman setter Truth Hafey were each named first team and freshman middle blocker Kristin Austin and sophomore middle blocker Kylie Miller were selected second team.

Kruse averages 3.41 kills and 2.64 digs per set and has a hitting percentage of .323. Vortouni is averaging 2.94 kills and hitting .357 on the year. Hafey averages 11.10 assists and 2.00 digs per set. Austin is hitting .509 and averages 1.93 kills per set. Bath is averaging 3.58 digs per set for the Lasers.

No. 16 Pasadena City defeated No. 17 Mt. SAC, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23, at home on Saturday in a play-in match.

Pasadena City won the South Coast Conference North Division for the second straight season.

PCC received a big night Saturday from Danielle Johnson, who recorded eight kills (hit .375), served her season-high six aces and had five block assists.

The Lancers made nine blocks for points and finished with 11 team aces, compared to just five blocks and five aces by the Mounties.

Leslie Rivera connected for a team-high nine kills with 15 digs and two blocks. Janell Currier added seven kills and 11 digs while Jada O'Mally contributed four kills and four blocks.

Tehya Topalian accconted for 23 set assists. Pamela Galvan made 16 digs.

Rivera led PCC on the year, averaging 3.13 kills and 3.15 digs per set.
