Women's volleyball team ranked No. 1 for second straight week

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team, off to a 5-0 start to begin the 2018 season, is ranked No. 1 for the second straight week in the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association State Top 25 Poll.

IVC has won 32 matches in a row dating back to 2016. 

Irvine Valley, which has yet to drop a set so far this season, recorded a pair of wins last week. The Lasers beat Palomar, 25-22, 25-12, 25-8, on the road and then started Orange Empire Conference action last Friday at home with a 25-5, 25-14, 25-17 win.

The Lasers are led by freshmen outside hitters Gabriela Griego (3.13 kills per set and a .355 hitting percentage) and Lea Kruse (3.07 kills per set and a .346 hitting percentage), sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni (2.67 kills per set and a .317 hitting percentage), freshman setter Truth Hafey (10.67 assists per set) and sophomore libero Renata Bath (3.33 digs per set).

Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday night, traveling to Golden West for a 6 p.m. conference contest.

Gavilan from Northern California stayed at No. 2 and El Camino remained at No. 3 behind Irvine Valley in the poll. Cabrillo moved up to fourth, Grossmont climbed to No. 5 and Moorpark rose to No. 6.

The rest of the top 10 included Hartnell, Sierra, Canyons and Long Beach City. 

Irvine Valley has wins over Canyons and Long Beach City this season.

Other OEC colleges in the poll include Cypress at No. 12, Fullerton at No. 17 and Orange Coast at No. 18.

Irvine Valley hosts Fullerton on Friday at 6 p.m.
