Irvine Valley's men's tennis team, which is ranked No. 1 in Southern California and finished second in the state last season, is off to a fast start to the 2015 year.
The Lasers have a record of 2-0 after beating a tough Grossmont squad, 6-3, at home on Tuesday afternoon. Grossmont was ranked No. 8 in Southern California.
Irvine Valley started the year with an 8-1 win at No. 10 El Camino last week.
On Tuesday at home, Irvine Valley dropped two of the three doubles matches.
The Lasers' lone win came at the No. 3 spot where the freshmen duo of Scott Paz and Carson Williams defeated Lawrence Liu and Ryan Ray, 8-3.
IVC dropped tough matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions - both 8-6.
But Irvine Valley rebounded in singles, winning five of six matches. All of the wins came in straight sets.
Sophomore Simon Guillin won, 7-6, 2-1, at No. 2 singles for the Lasers.
Freshman Flavien Raveau came out on top, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot.
Williams won, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, freshman Tony Selim earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 spot and Paz won, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
Irvine Valley sophomore and reigning Orange Empire Conference player of the year Guillermo Ucelay fell in a close match at No. 1 singles.
Grossmont's Morgan Peyre defeated Ucelay, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0.
In the win over El Camino last week on the road, Irvine Valley got singles victories from Williams, Paz, sophomore Max Rumeau, freshman Stan Gavoty and sophomore Valentin Baize and doubles victories from the teams of Rumeau and Baize, Paz and Williams and Raveau and Gavorty.
Irvine Valley will face its biggest test of the young season on Thursday when it hosts Cerritos at home at 2 p.m. Cerritos was ranked No. 3 in Southern California to begin the year.
