Men's tennis team earns award at Ojai

Irvine Valley's men's tennis team didn't come away with the team title at the State Championships last week at Ventura College, losing to defending champion Fresno City in the final.

But the Lasers picked up some other hardware to bring back to Irvine.

IVC claimed the award for most wins during the state individual singles and doubles competitions by a community college at Ojai last weekend.

Irvine Valley had six singles players and three doubles teams competing in the tournaments.

IVC top player, Guillermo Ucelay, was seeded third in singles.

The freshman earned a bye and then picked up, 6-0, 6-1, and, 6-1, 6-0, victories in his first two matches.

In the round of 16, Ucelay beat sixth-seeded Brenden Lum of Foothill, 6-1, 6-2.

Ucelay lost to seventh-seeded Vitor Mendes of Ventura, 7-6(1), 5-7, 6-1.

Freshman Simon Guillin, who was seeded eighth, received a bye and then won his next two matches, 7-5, 6-1, and 6-1, 6-4, before losing to top-seeded Lovedeep Singh of American River, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 16.

Sophomore Steven Le, who was seeded 13th, also won two matches. He got a bye in the first round and then won his next two contests in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, and 6-4, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals.

There he fell to sixth-seeded Richard Catabona of LA Pierce, 6-2, 6-4.

Sophomore James Lafond won two matches, earning 6-1, 6-1, and, 6-3, 6-3 victories before losing in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, to ninth-seeded Amadi Kagoma of Cerritos in the round of 32.

Freshman Jack Divorty won his first match, 6-1, 6-1, and then got a default win over second-seeded Matthew Alves of Fresno in the round of 32. Divorty was up, 3-2, in the opening set when Alves had to stop.

Divorty then upset 15th-seeded Thales Castro of LA Pierce, 6-0, 7-5, in the round of 32.

He lost in the round of 16 to seventh-seeded Vitor Mendes of Ventura, 6-1, 6-4.

IVC freshman Kevin Pham got a bye in the first round and then fell to 12th-seeded Alec Bessinger of Fresno, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 64.

In doubles for the Lasers, the team of Guillin and Ucelay, seeded fifth, reached the quarterfinals. The duo got a bye and then won its next two matches, 6-2, 6-1, and 6-1, 6-1.

Guillin and Ucelay earned an injury default win over the third-seeded team of Wallace Lau and Brenden Lum of Foothill in the round of 16.

The IVC team lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champions Nathan Eshmade and Amadi Kagoma of Cerritos, 6-4, 6-4.

The team of Lafond and Le, which was seeded 13th, got a bye and then won two straight matches, 6-1, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-2.

Lafond and Le fell to the sixth-seeded team of Victor Dos Santos and Vitor Mendes of Ventura, 6-2, 6-3.

And Divorty and freshman Thomas Gibson received a bye and then beat the 14th -seeded team of Eric Nishimatsu and Alvaro de Landaluce of Foothill, 6-0, 6-1.

Divorty and Gibson lost to the third-seeded team of Bruno Campos and Vitor Galvao of Mt. San Jacinto, 6-2, 7-5.

The singles and doubles tournaments wrapped up Irvine Valley's season. The Lasers won their most matches in history (17) in a season, captured their first Orange Empire Conference title, went 10-0 in conference, made the playoffs for the first time, hosted their first playoff match and reached the state final match.

Ucelay was also named the Orange Empire Conference player of the year and IVC coach Ross Duncan was named the conference's coach of the year.
