Irvine Valley's men's tennis team showed the depth of its 2014 team in the season opener on Tuesday at Cerritos.
The Lasers earned one win in doubles and got victories from its third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles players in a 5-4 come from behind non-conference triumph.
Irvine Valley dropped two of the three doubles matches.
The No. 2 match was close with the IVC team of freshmen Guillermo Ucelay and Jack Divorty, losing, 8-6.
The Lasers picked up their doubles point at the No. 3 spot as the freshmen team of Kevin Pham and Austin Do defeated Milos Zoric and Edgar Munoz, 8-2.
In singles, Ucelay beat Nick Simonelli, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 3 position, sophomore James Lafond defeated Zoric, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot, Pham won over Sheldon Hseih, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 and freshman Max Rumeau beat Simon Graf, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 6 position.
Sophomore Steven Lee lost a tough match at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6(6) to Cerritos' Amada Kagoma.
Irvine Valley, which is coming off a solid 2013 season in which it had a record of 13-4, finished second in the Orange Empire Conference and was ranked No. 13 in the final state poll, plays again on Thursday.
The Lasers host their first match of the season against Mt. SAC at 2 p.m.
