Men's soccer team earns No. 13 seed for So. Cal. Regionals

The Irvine Valley men's soccer team is in the California Community College Athletic Association So. Cal. Regional Playoffs.

The Lasers, who had one of the toughest schedules in the state, earned the No. 13 seed and will host No. 20 Antelope Valley on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

IVC finished fifth in the Orange Empire Conference. But all top five teams reached the playoffs with Fullerton seeded third, Golden West seventh, Santa Ana 12th, Irvine Valley 13th and Cypress 14th in the bracket.

Irvine Valley finished the year with a record of 10-6-5 overall and 5-3-4 in conference.

The Lasers ended with the 14th-best power point rating in Southern California.

Irvine Valley ended the regular season with a 2-0 loss to OEC champion Fullerton last Thursday at home. Freshman goalie Tygo Steenvoorden made three saves in the defeat for the Lasers.

IVC is ready to move on to the postseason with a squad that first-year head coach Conor Ward is proud of.

Laser freshman Grant Miller led the conference in goals with 13 and points with 30.

Several other Lasers stood out all year.

Sophomore midfielder Julian Svoboda paced the OEC in assists with 14 and was fifth in points with 16.

Freshman center back Lennart Granzow was a top defender in the state and Steenvoorden finished second in the conference in goals against average at 1.04.

Antelope Valley had an overall record of 8-6-4 and went 5-1-2 in the Western State Conference South Division behind Bakersfield.

Antelope Valley lost a tough game, 3-2, at Bakersfield to wrap up the regular season. The game decided the conferene title.

Chris Romero leads the Marauders with eight goals and 20 points. But Jaret Rojas has also chipped in eight goals and seven points.

Francisco Brasiliano has contributed five assists and Bryan Rios Martinez has been the main keeper for Antelope Valley. He has 54 saves and is only allowing 2.23 goals per match.

The winner of Wednesday's matchup will travel to No. 4 El Camino on Saturday in the next round.
