Irvine Valley's soccer team had scored two goals in its last four matches.

The Lasers topped that number by three on Tuesday at home.

Irvine Valley defeated Orange Coast, 5-1, in an Orange Empire Conference game.

"It was nice to hit five goals," Irvine Valley coach Conor Ward said. "We have defended really well the last few games (where IVC had a record of 1-1-2), but we were unable to score as many goals as we should have. This gives us some confidence."

It was the fourth time this season that Irvine Valley has scored at least five goals in a contest.

IVC players took full advantage of their chances, jumping out to a 2-0 lead at the break and then finishing with three more goals in the second half.

The win moved Irvine Valley up in the standings and into third place with a record of 4-2-2. The Lasers have a record of 9-5-3 overall. Orange Coast went to 5-10-0 overall and 2-5-0 in conference.

The Lasers pressured from the opening whistle on Tuesday. Plenty of chances and goals followed.

Irvine Valley got on the board in the ninth minute when sophomore defender Diego Llergo scored on of the team's best goals of the season.

He nailed a left-footed shot from nearly 30 yards out that beat the OCC keeper to the lower left corner. Freshman midfielder Julian Svoboda earned the assist.

Twelve minutes later, Irvine Valley was at it again. Freshman forward Christopher Camarena took a cross from sophomore forward Adem Toskic and put the ball in the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

Irvine Valley had a few other really good chances in the first half, but couldn't convert. IVC still led, 2-0, after 45 minutes.

IVC's third goal, 18 minutes into the second half, was another beauty. Freshman forward Grant Miller headed in a corner kick by freshman defender Akifumi Mikami.

And it became a 4-0 lead in the 72nd minute when Miller scored again off of a long punt from freshman keeper Tygo Steenvoorden.

Orange Coast pulled a goal back in the 75th minute when Jared Velazquez scored on a penalty kick.

The Lasers closed out their five-goal performance in the 82nd minute when Camarena put a pass through to freshman forward Martin Fabatia. He first shot was blocked by the Pirate goalie, but he sent it past him right after.

"Chris Camarena stood out again," Ward said. "Julian (Svoboda) was excellent on the ball and it was nice to have Moises Delgado back in the lineup. He gives us some control and vision in the midfield."

Steenvoorden had to make just one save on the day with the help of defenders, including Gabriel Velasco, Lennart Granzow, Steven Osuna and Llergo.

Ward was also able to enter 24 of the IVC players in the game.

"We are trying to use our depth," Ward said. "It is helping out because some guys can get a bit of a break. I am happy that whoever is coming in as a reserve is stepping in and raising the standard for everyone."

IVC now moves on to a big contest on Friday at Cypress at 3 p.m.

The Chargers are just behind the Lasers in the OEC standings. And the top five teams are all still in the running for a conference title.

"That is going to just be a huge match," Ward said.
