Basketball player Jack Taylor signs with University of Providence

Irvine Valley sophomore men's basketball player Jack Taylor has signed with the University of Providence, which is an NAIA school in Great Falls, Mont.

Taylor, a 6-2 shooting guard, gray-shirted for the Lasers during the 2014-15 season and played for the Lasers the past two years.

He helped IVC finish with a record of 14-14 overall this past season and make the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Taylor averaged 3.7 points a game for IVC and had three games with 10 or more points, including scoring 11 points twice.

He had five rebounds in Irvine Valley's 72-70 win over San Diego City last December and recorded five assists in an IVC 83-67 victory over Orange Coast in February.

But his importance to the Irvine Valley program was a lot more than just numbers, according to long-time head coach Jerry Hernandez.

"Jack is the perfect student athlete," Hernandez said. "His character and value system is really high. He was an absolute joy to have in our system. Jack is so perceptive and so coachable.

"As a player, he is very athletic and explosive and spot shoots the ball really well. I think his best basketball is still in front of him. I am just so happy for him because he worked extremely hard for this opportunity."

Taylor is headed to University of Providence program (formerly the University of Great Falls) that finished last season with a record of 12-18 overall.
