Men's basketball team drops second straight in Cypress tourney

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team dropped two close games in the Don Johnson Tournament at Cypress last week.

The Lasers fell to Moorpark, 71-69, last Thursday and then lost to Southwestern, 71-65, on Friday.

The two defeats gave Irvine Valley a record of 6-5 overall.

Against Moorpark, freshman forward Lance Coleman II led the way for IVC with 26 points and five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Anthony Hernandez added 12 points and three assists, sophomore guard Zuri Williams had eight points and four assists and sophomore forward Zach Harvey contributed eight points and nine rebounds.

The Lasers trailed by 15 points five minutes into the second half. IVC battled and pulled to within two points with under a minute left, but couldn't get any closer.

In the game against Southwestern, Irvine Valley got another strong performance from Coleman, who finished with 25 points and seven rebounds.

It was the eighth game this season that he has scored at least 20 points.

Sophomore guard Mike Turner finished with 11 points and sophomore guard Jack Taylor had 11 points for IVC.

But the Lasers got out-rebounded, 37-29, by Southwestern.

Southwestern also went to the free throw line 16 more times and made 11 more free throws than Irvine Valley.

Emilio Arellano finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds to pace Southwestern.

Irvine Valley will play again on Thursday when it travels to the Bill Brummel Classic at Saddleback. The Lasers open against San Diego City at 3 p.m.
