Men's basketball team wins consolation title at Cypress event

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team rebounded from a tough loss to LA Harbor in the first round of the Don Johnson Classic at Cypress to take the consolation title of the event.

The Lasers won their final two games of the tournament and improved their record to 9-3 on the season.

Irvine Valley defeated Victor Valley, 82-70, in the consolation title game on Saturday.

All-tournament selection freshman guard Chris Lott scored a team high 18 points to lead the Lasers.

Xavier Roy paced the Rams with 19 points.

Irvine Valley shot 62 percent from the field in the first half to take a 39-34 lead.

The Lasers went to a zone defense to start the second half and Victor Valley had trouble attacking it.

IVC built a double-digit lead and held on for the win.

Sophomore forward Tanner Aguera added 14 points, sophomore guard Jacob Short chipped in 11 points and sophomore forward Craig Magyar had 10 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Lasers in the win.

Irvine Valley shot 62.0 percent (31 of 50) from the field in the victory, including making 6 of 13 three-pointers (46.2 percent).

To make the consolation title game, Irvine Valley had to rally to beat Cuyamaca on Friday.

first eight minutes of the game went back and forth, but Cuyamaca built a 40-33 lead going into the half.

But the Lasers began the second half on an 18-11 run to tie the game at 51 with 14 minutes remaining.

Down by 3 with 1.8 seconds left, Cuyamaca drew up a play for Chase Parsons in the left corner, but his shot was off the mark and Irvine Valley won the game, 74-71.

Parsons had a game-high 29 points for the Coyotes while Lott led the Lasers with 20 points.

Freshman center Lamont Tyler and Magyar each added 12 points. Magyar also had seven rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Mike Turner and sophomore forward Jacob Dean each contributed nine points for Irvine Valley. Turner also had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Irvine Valley plays again next Thursday in the Bill Brummel Classic at Saddleback. IVC opens the event against Mt. San Jacinto at 3 p.m.
