Men's basketball team begins season splitting games

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team started its 2015-16 season with a win and a loss last week.

The Lasers defeated El Camino , 70-59, last Tuesday on the road.

Sophomore forward Jacob Dean led IVC with 11 points.

Freshman guard Chris Lott and sophomore guard Jacob Short each added 10 points.

Freshman forward Zach Harvey finished with nine points, six rebounds and four blocked shots and sophomore forward Craig Magyar had eight points.

Irvine Valley won despite shooting just 39.3 percent (22 of 56) from the field in the contest.

IVC won the game at the line, making 24 of 34 free throws. The Lasers out-scored El Camino, 24-8, at the charity stripe.

The Lasers also had seven blocks as a team in the contest.

Irvine Valley lost at Cuyamaca, 80-67, on Friday.

Isaiah Milan finished with a team-high 21 points for IVC, but he was the only Laser player in double figures.

Lott and Dean each added seven points. Magyar had six points and eight rebounds.

Irvine Valley out-rebounded Cuyamaca, 42-27, but the Coyotes made more shots.

Cuyamaca shot 47.5 percent (29 of 61) from the field to Irvine Valley's 38.7 percent (24 of 62). Cuyamaca had 22 assists on its 29 made baskets and committed just eight turnovers.

Irvine Valley, which was ranked No. 12 in Southern California in the coaches poll, will host its own Irvine Valley Classic this Thursday through Saturday.
