Men's basketball team off to flying start in own Classic

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team struggled at times during its first two games of the season last week.

That wasn't the case on Thursday night as it opened up play in its own Irvine Valley College Classic.

Irvine Valley pounded Long Beach City, 88-58, in an opening-round game.

The win lifted Irvine Valley's record to 2-1 overall and sent the Lasers into the semifinals against Santa Monica on Friday night at 7 p.m.

IVC had five players score in double figures in the victory.

Irvine Valley got 14 points and five assists from freshman point guard Isaiah Milan and 12 points each from sophomore guard Jacob Short and sophomore forward Tanner Aguera.

Freshman forward Zach Harvey added 11 points and nine rebounds and sophomore forward Jacob Dean had 10 points.  

Freshman forward Riley Kemmer chipped in seven points and sophomore forward Craig Magyar contributed six points and five assists.

Irvine Valley shot an impressive 62.5 percent (35 of 56) from the field in the game, including 65.5 percent (19 of 29) in the opening half when it built a big lead.

The Lasers were up, 47-22, at halftime behind 10 points from Milan and seven points each from Harvey, Short and Aguera.

IVC also out-scored Long Beach City, 50-22, in the paint and got 48 bench points overall on the night.

Irvine Valley led by as many as 34 points in the second half.

Long Beach City saw its record slip to 3-2 overall. The Vikings were paced by nine points by Chris Camper.

Long Beach City shot just 28.6 percent (16 of 56) in the game and were 2 of 18 from three-point range.

The Vikings will play Cuyamaca in a consolation game on Friday at 3 p.m.
