Men's basketball team falls to LA Harbor in Cypress event

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team suffered a 58-52 loss to LA Harbor in the opening round of the Don Johnson Classic at Cypress on Thursday.

The loss dropped Irvine Valley's record to 7-3 overall, while LA Harbor improved to 3-6.

The Seahawks managed to pull away in the final minute and advance to the second round against Rio Hondo.

Irvine Valley fell into the consolation bracket and will play Cuyamaca at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Sophomore forward Craig Magyar led the Lasers with nine points and six rebounds while freshman guard Mike Turner chipped in seven points and five rebounds.

Sophomore forward Tanner Aguera also had nine points and freshman guard Isaiah Milan finished with seven points for IVC.

The Lasers shot just 33.3 percent (30 of 60) from the floor for the game.

Dushone Brown had an all-around performance for the Seahawks, scoring 14 points to go with 12 rebounds, five steals, and two blocks.

The Seahawks defended well in the first half, holding the Lasers to 23.5 percent shooting in route to a 30-22 lead.

Irvine Valley managed to climb back with an 11-4 run to start the half capped by Magyar's jumper.

The basket gave Irvine Valley a 36-34 lead.

But LA Harbor took back the lead and the two teams remained close down the stretch.

A three-pointer by Magyar got Irvine Valley within 54-52 with 1:23 left in the game.

LA Harbor's Dharion Taylor ended any hopes of an IVC comeback victory with a layup with 19 seconds remaining to put the game away.
