Baseball team splits non-conference games with LA Harbor

Irvine Valley's baseball team started off its two-game, non-conference series with LA Harbor on the right foot Tuesday, finishing with 21 hits in a 14-7 win at the OC Great Park.

The 21 hits and 14 runs were both season highs for IVC.

But the Lasers gave up a five-run lead late and lost to the Seahawks on the road on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Irvine Valley was up, 5-4, when it blew the game open with a five-run bottom of the fourth inning.

Sophomore center fielder Joey Lapolla had a two-run double to left field to highlight the frame for the Lasers.

IVC added two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to round out its scoring.

Freshman right fielder Jack Haggerty and freshman second baseman Nolan Cusey led the charge on offense.

Haggerty went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBI and Cusey was 3 for 3 with two walks, two runs scored and four RBI.

Lapolla went 2 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBI and freshman third baseman Shane Kary, freshman first baseman Casey Kudell and freshman catcher Connor Tallakson each also had two hits for IVC.

Freshman right-hander Jeremy Wiegman picked up the win after pitching the first four innings. He gave up four runs on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts to improve his record to 4-2 overall.

On Wednesday at Harbor, IVC held a 6-1 lead thanks to a grand slam by Kudell in the top of the third inning, but the Seahawks scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-4 game.

LA Harbor tied the game at 7 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and then put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

For IVC, Kudell went 1 for 3 with two walks, a home run and four RBI and Haggerty was 4 for 5 with a double and a run scored.

Freshman right fielder John Oliveras added a double and one RBI.

On the mound, sophomore lefty Nate Madole started and went five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout.

Freshman righty Ryan Barlow took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings.

Irvine Valley's record went to 15-19 overall.

The Lasers are back in action next Tuesday playing at Santa Ana at 2 p.m. in an Orange Empire Conference game.
