Baseball team gives up big seventh inning, falls to Fullerton

Irvine Valley's baseball team was back at Cal State Fullerton for a home game on Saturday afternoon against Fullerton College.

But the Lasers couldn't repeat their success from Tuesday at Goodwin Field against the Hornets.

IVC dropped the rubber game of the Orange Empire Conference series, 18-5, to Fullerton.

Irvine Valley's record went to 13-10 overall and 2-4 in the OEC. Fullerton improved to 16-9 overall and 4-2 in conference.

The two teams went back and forth early with Fullerton scoring three runs in the top of the first and IVC answering with three runs in the bottom of the second to tie things up.

And the Lasers led, 5-4, heading into the seventh inning after they took the lead with a run-scoring single by freshman third baseman Shane Kary.

But in the top of the seventh inning, Fullerton scored seven runs on seven hits. The Hornets took went up for good on a RBI single by Garet Crenshaw up the middle.

The big blow of the inning was a two-run triple by Fullerton's Miguel Ortiz.

Fullerton finished with 19 hits and was led by Ortiz, who went 3 for 5 with a triple and three RBI.

Dominic Martinez went 3 for 5 for a double and two RBI for FC.

Irvine Valley was paced at the plate by freshman first baseman Casey Kudell, who went 2 for 3 with a walk, a triple and three runs scored.

Freshman shortstop Nick Madole went 1 for 3 with two RBI for the Lasers.

Freshman right-handed reliever Mekhi Wright took the loss on the mound for Irvine Valley. He had a perfect sixth inning with a strikeout, but gave up four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh.

Irvine Valley plays again on Tuesday, starting a three-game, conference series with Riverside at the OC Great Park Stadium at 2 p.m.
