Baseball team puts game away late against Mt. San Jacinto

Irvine Valley won its second straight game and evened its record on the season with a 7-6 nonconference victory over Mt. San Jacinto on Monday at the OC Great Park Stadium.

The Lasers (3-3) play again on Thursday at the OC Great Park Stadium. IVC will host a doubleheader against San Bernardino Valley. Friday's scheduled game at SBVC will now be part of the doubleheader.

The two squads will get underway at 1 p.m. on Thursday with a nine-inning game and then a second, seven-inning game will follow.

On Monday, Irvine Valley held a 3-1 after four innings behind solid pitching by freshman righthander Ryan Barlow.

Mt. San Jacinto scored three runs (none earned) in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 advantage. Barlow recorded the first two outs, but a passed ball on a strikeout and two fly balls lost in the sun gave the Eagles the lead at 4-3.

Irvine Valley tied the game at 4-4 on in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error by Mt. San Jacinto and then the Lasers jumped back in front, 5-4, in the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman left fielder Jack Haggerty scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles evened the game again, however, in the top of the eighth inning on a groundout RBI by Nolan Smith.

But IVC took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning. A single by freshman right fielder Bradley Wilkison scored freshman shortstop Nick Madole, who had tripled to lead off the inning.

And then later in the inning, Haggerty singled with one out to bring in Wilkison to give Irvine Valley a 7-5 lead.

Sophomore lefty Nate Madole closed out the game in the ninth. He gave up one run, but got Andre Torres to foul out on a nice play near the netting by freshman first baseman Casey Kudell to end the game.

Barlow ended up going five innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Freshman righty Austin Chapman (2-0) earned the win in relief. He pitched three innings and gave up one run on two hits with six strikeouts.

And Nate Madole picked up the save.

Mt. San Jacinto reliever Chris Scovel (0-1) took the loss. He pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

For IVC on offense, Haggerty, Kudell and freshman second baseman Nolan Cusey each had two hits.

Wilkison drove in two runs and Haggerty and Kudell each scored two runs for the Lasers, who finished with 10 hits on the day.

Mt. San Jacinto, who saw its record slip to 4-2-1, was led by Phoenix Sommay, who went 4 for 4 with one RBI and one run scored.
