Irvine Valley's baseball team had LA Mission on the ropes for six innings in a nonconference game Wednesday afternoon at IVC.
But a two-run home run in the top of the seventh and then the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth gave LA Mission a 4-3 win over the Lasers.
LA Mission, which leads the Western State Conference South Division, improved its record to 22-11 overall. Irvine Valley's record went to 9-24.
Irvine Valley scored two runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Sophomore left fielder Matt Harris knocked in the two runs with a two-out single to left center. It scored freshman shortstop Zach Vittetow, who walked, and freshman second baseman Dallas Porter, who singled earlier in the inning.
The Lasers held on to that lead until the seventh when Joe Goring hit a two-run homer over the left field fence off Irvine Valley sophomore starting pitcher Chris Lumanlan to tie the game at 3-3.
Then in the top of the eighth, Peyton Long and Austin Rodriguez hit back-to-back singles to start the inning.
After a fielder's choice for an out, Conner O'Brien hit a fly ball to center that scored Long from third base with what turned out to be the winning run.
Irvine Valley got a runner to third base in the bottom of the ninth inning. Freshman center fielder Brett Hamilton singled to lead off the inning, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Vittetow and then advanced to third on a fly out by Porter.
But relief pitcher Aaron Hamilton was able to get a groundout to end the game and pick up a save.
Lumanlan pitched a strong game, but took the loss for IVC. He went eight innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts.
Freshman Buddy Brouwer threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Lasers.
Dylan Goldsack got the win for LA Mission. He allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Irvine Valley finished with nine hits in the game. Hamilton was 3 for 5 and Harris went 2 for 4 with two RBI.
Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday, hosting Pasadena City in a nonconference game at 2 p.m.
