Baseball team ends first round of conference with loss at Fullerton

Irvine Valley's baseball team suffered a 5-2 loss at Fullerton on Thursday afternoon.

The defeat dropped the Lasers' record to 6-13 overall and 2-5 in the Orange Empire Conference.

The game was the final one of the first round of conference play.

IVC starts the second round of conference next Tuesday at Saddleback at 2 p.m. IVC hosts Saddleback next Thursday.

Fullerton went up early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Riley Roberts had an RBI single, Ricky Perez hit a scoring sacrifice fly and then Nick Gotta followed with an RBI single.

Fullerton added two more runs in the fifth inning on a single by Oscar Heredia and a walk to Roberts with the bases loaded.

The Lasers got on the board with a run in both the top of the seventh and eighth innings.

In the seventh, sophomore left fielder Matt Harris walked. With one out, freshman third baseman Adam Vargas was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.

Then with two outs, freshman left fielder J'Anthony Sanchez singled to load the bases. Freshman catcher Pedro Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to bring in the run.

In the eighth inning, freshman center fielder Brett Hamilton singled to open the inning. Sophomore shortstop Dallas Porter then walked. After an out, Hamilton and Porter moved up after steals.

Sophomore designated hitter Jesus Meza singled to shortstop to drive in Hamilton.

But the Lasers couldn't bring in any more runs.

IVC ended up leaving 16 runners on base in the game.

Irvine Valley had nine hits and seven batters walked in the game.

Hamilton was 3 for 5 and Gonzalez went 2 for 4 for IVC in the contest.

Sophomore pitcher Chris Lumanlan took the loss on the mound. He went five innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk. He struck out three batters.

Sophomore Jeremy Ibarra pitched three scoreless innings of relief. He allosed three hits and one walk.

Fullerton's starting pitcher Dylan Prohoroff earned his third win of the season, throwing six innings. He gave up five hits and struck out six batters.
