Baseball team bounces back with victories over Barstow

Irvine Valley's baseball team won two of three games it played against Barstow on Saturday at home.

The Lasers dropped the first game, which was a resumed contest from one that was postponed Friday evening because of darkness.

That game left off tied, 5-5, after 11 innings. It took three more innings to settle it on Saturday morning. Barstow pushed across two runs in the top of the 14th and held on for a 7-5 victory.

But Irvine Valley played solid ball after that, winning Saturday's scheduled doubleheader, 13-1, and, 10-5.

Both of the doubleheader games were shortened to seven innings so that all of the contests would be finished.

Irvine Valley busted open the first game of the doubleheader by scoring nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. It gave the team a 13-1 lead.

In the second game of the twin bill, Irvine Valley opened with a run in the first and then added two runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and five runs in the sixth to take control.

Barstow scored four runs in the seventh to make it closer.

IVC out-scored Barstow, 28-13, over the three-game series. The Lasers hit .267 during the three games and had a 2.25 team ERA.

The star of the series for Irvine Valley was freshman second baseman Nate Cervantes, who batted .545 (6 of 11) with four walks and five RBI in the three games. He was also solid in the field.

Freshman shortstop Zach Vittetow batted .364 with three walks and five runs scored and sophomore outfielder Matt Harris hit .333 with six RBI for the Lasers over the three-game series.

On the mound, Irvine Valley starting pitchers Donny Pierce and Chris Lumanlan both looked good Saturday. Each earned victories.
